Coaching isn’t a method, it’s a space

There are moments in a professional life that don’t look spectacular, but change everything.

That day looked unremarkable on the surface. And yet it marked a profound shift in my understanding of coaching, and more broadly in my role with others.

An unexpected reflection retreat

It all began after a period of voluntary withdrawal.

Not a scheduled pause in a calendar, but a real inner suspension. A need to step back from what I was doing, what I was building, and what it truly meant.

I was looking for answers, but above all for clarity.

A vague idea of coaching

At that point, coaching was still an abstract idea.

I saw it as a mix of conversation, support, and personal development. But without truly grasping its real depth.

And above all, I wasn’t yet aligned with that identity.

I watched it from a distance.

The turning point

Then there was that precise moment when something changed.

It wasn’t a spectacular revelation. It was a quiet understanding.

I realized that coaching wasn’t a method.

It was a space.

A space where people can finally hear what they already know, but can’t yet articulate clearly.

Initial rejection

What’s surprising is that this realization didn’t immediately generate enthusiasm.

On the contrary.

There was rejection. A form of inner resistance. Almost embarrassment.

As if this new direction were too simple to be legitimate. Too intuitive to be serious.

From resistance to acceptance

Only over time did the perspective shift.

By observing conversations, interactions, moments when people unblock, I understood something essential: coaching isn’t about adding complexity.

It’s about removing what clouds clarity.

A new way of listening

This shift in perspective transformed how I listen.

I was no longer trying to answer. I was trying to understand what was already there, but not yet expressed.

And it’s in that space that coaching makes full sense.

Conclusion

Understanding coaching, for me, wasn’t a theoretical learning process.

It was an inner shift.
